Lefkada is the fourth in size Greek island in the Ionian Sea. Situated close to the coast of Akarnania, where in ancient times was believed that
it was its peninsula. Today it is separated from the small but historic
Straits of Drepano. The main sources of wealth are tourism, oil production, viticulture and fishing.
Next to Levkas are located the small islands of Meganissi, Sparta, Scorpios ( the famous island of Onassis ), Arkoudi, Atokos, Kastos and Kalamos. Levkas was named Holy Black (Santa Maura), a
name that it was taken by the church of Agia Mavra,
built by the Franks in the 13th century in the homonym fortress.
